Thus began our voyage into timeshare resales. We listed our timeshare twice through a well-known real estate sales company but at the end of the day – we still had that timeshare. After numerous other unsuccessful attempts to get rid of it and after a lot of investigation into the timeshare industry, we realized that our experience was all too common. There were countless other families, just like ours, who were spending a fortune on a timeshare vacation that they couldn’t even enjoy!

Do you remember the siren call of the timeshare sales team: “Hello! You’ve been specially selected to enjoy a free vacation.” The lure of a simple one hour presentation and then a fun-filled weekend in a beautiful timeshare resort turns out to be a lengthy high-pressure sales pitch that leaves everyone mentally and financially drained.

But, how can anyone complain about having a deed to a place in paradise, right? Research shows out of every three timeshare owners, there is generally one who uses his timeshare regularly and finds no issue with the assorted fees. The remaining two owners have an entirely different experience, often never using their timeshares.

    Reasons include:
  • Unavailable Weeks
  • Finding the Time To Go
  • Inability to Travel Due To Sickness
  • Major life Events like Divorce or Death of a Spouse

But these timeshare owners pay every year regardless, and frequently pay outrageous fees trying to rent or resell their weeks.

This scenario is so common it prompted “Newsweek,” to publish an article in 1993 titled “The Trap in Timeshares” by Jane Bryant Quinn. She makes no bones about pointing out the consequences of timeshare ownership stating, “If your taste ever changes, a timeshare can hang around your neck like an albatross. In most cases there’s no certain way of pulling free" (July 23, 1993).

Many owners invest serious time, energy and money advertising their timeshare for rent or resale. With so many other inexpensive travel alternatives available via the internet, finding someone willing to pay the higher cost of a timeshare is a daunting task.

Unloading a timeshare is anything but easy for owners desperate for relief from their burden. Quinn addresses the dilemma in her “Newsweek” article saying, “Annual maintenance fees continue. To escape them you have to sell – and that’s when you learn that a time-share resort is easy to join but tough to leave.” Quinn isn’t the only one with such dire warnings. The Florida State Attorney General’s website cautions consumers about the timeshare resales market, “The [Re-Sale] Company’s salespeople are likely to claim that the market in the area where your resort is located is ‘hot’ and that they are being overwhelmed with buyer requests for your resort…Be skeptical of these types of claims. Remember the timeshare market is not ‘hot’ and it is unlikely that there is a buyer ready and willing to buy your timeshare.”
